In the intricacies of tax regulations and insurance dynamics in India, the interplay between Goods and Services Tax (GST) on health insurance premiums and the tax benefits available under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961, is a nuanced subject that warrants careful exploration. This article explores the complexities surrounding the applicability of GST on health insurance premiums. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the deductions available under Section 80D, shedding light on how individuals can navigate the tax landscape while safeguarding their health and financial well-being.

GST on Health Insurance Premiums: An Overview:

Goods and Services Tax (GST), introduced in India in 2017, revolutionized the taxation landscape across various sectors, including insurance. Health insurance, a pivotal component of the insurance industry, is subject to GST. Presently, health insurance premiums attract an 18% GST rate.

Policyholders must grasp that the GST component is usually added to the payable premium amount. The inclusion of GST in the premium directly impacts the overall cost of health insurance coverage. However, the crucial point to note is that when it comes to tax deductions under Section 80D, the applicability of GST on health insurance premiums does not diminish the deduction amount.

Section 80D: Decoding the Tax Benefits:

Section 80D of the Income Tax Act 1961 serves as a crucial provision offering tax benefits to individuals investing in health insurance policies. The section acknowledges the significance of health coverage and incentivises taxpayers to prioritize their well-being by offering deductions for premiums paid towards health insurance. Let’s delve into the deductions available under Section 80D in detail:

Deductions for Premiums Paid for Self, Spouse, and Children:

Individuals below 60 can claim deductions of up to Rs. 25,000 for premiums paid towards health insurance policies covering themselves, their spouse, and dependent children.

If the individual or their spouse is a senior citizen (60 years of age or above), the maximum deductible will increase to Rs. 50,000.

Additional Deductions for Parents:

Taxpayers can avail additional deductions for premiums paid on behalf of their parents.

The deductible amount for parents below 60 years of age is Rs. 25,000.

If either of the parents is a senior citizen, the maximum deductible amount rises to Rs. 50,000.

In cases where the taxpayer and their parents are senior citizens, the total deductible amount can go up to Rs. 1,00,000.

Crucially, the deductions under Section 80D are available irrespective of the GST component in the health insurance premiums. The eligible deduction amounts are calculated based on the total premium paid, including the GST.

GST on Health Insurance Premiums and Section 80D Deductions:

While GST is levied on health insurance premiums, the deduction under Section 80D applies to the total premium amount, including the GST component. The tax benefits under Section 80D are strategically designed to encourage individuals to invest in health insurance for themselves and their family members. Significantly, including GST in the premium amount does not diminish the deductible portion under Section 80D.

The rationale behind allowing deductions on the entire premium, including GST, is grounded in the recognition that the overall cost of health insurance, including GST, contributes to the financial commitment made by the taxpayer towards securing health coverage. Consequently, individuals can confidently include the entire premium amount, including GST, when calculating the eligible deduction under Section 80D.

Navigating the Tax Landscape: Tips and Considerations:

Maintain Detailed Records:

To ensure accurate and optimal tax planning, individuals should meticulously maintain detailed records of health insurance premiums paid, including the GST component. This documentation is crucial when claiming deductions under Section 80D during the income tax filing process.

Understand Policy Terms and Conditions:

Thorough comprehension of the terms and conditions of the health insurance policy is paramount. Familiarity with policy details, including coverage, exclusions, and waiting periods, ensures that individuals make informed decisions and can maximize their tax benefits under Section 80D.

Consider the Family Structure:

The tax benefits under Section 80D vary based on the age of the individuals covered. Considering the family structure and the age of family members is essential when determining the applicable deduction limits. Assessing parents’ age and eligibility for senior citizen deductions is particularly important.

Review and Update Coverage Regularly:

Health insurance needs to evolve, and reviewing and updating coverage regularly is prudent. Periodic assessments ensure that the chosen health insurance plan aligns with the changing healthcare needs of the family and optimizes the tax benefits available under Section 80D.

Explore Additional Coverages:

Some health insurance policies offer additional coverages such as critical illness or maternity benefits. Exploring these other coverages can provide enhanced protection and may contribute to increased deduction limits under Section 80D.

Consult with Tax Professionals:

Consulting with tax professionals is advisable for individuals with complex financial situations or those seeking personalized tax advice. Tax professionals can provide tailored guidance based on individual circumstances, ensuring that tax planning aligns with overall financial goals.

Conclusion

In the intricate web of tax regulations and health insurance dynamics, the interplay between GST on health insurance premiums and the tax benefits under Section 80D is critical for individuals seeking to optimize their financial well-being. Recognizing the importance of health coverage, the government has structured Section 80D to provide tangible incentives for individuals investing in health insurance.

Taxpayers must understand that the GST component in health insurance premiums does not diminish the deductions available under Section 80D. The premium amount, including GST, is considered when calculating the eligible deduction. By navigating the tax landscape with a comprehensive understanding of Section 80D and the implications of GST on health insurance premiums, individuals can make informed decisions that safeguard their health and contribute to a more secure and tax-efficient financial future.

From palatial accommodations to personalized experiences, the evolution of luxury hospitality has redefined the way travelers experience comfort, elegance, and unparalleled service.

Here is a small guide on the evolution of luxury hospitality, the factors that have reshaped the industry, and the new standards of luxury and open ways for masters in luxury management as one of the most demanding jobs in the market.

1. The Birth Of Experiential Luxury

Historically, luxury hospitality was synonymous with lavish decor, extravagant furnishings, and impeccable service. Grand hotels and resorts catered to aristocrats, celebrities, and elites, offering a retreat from the ordinary world and a taste of opulence.

As the industry evolved, luxury began to transcend material wealth. Experiential luxury emerged, focusing on personalized experiences and emotional connections. Guests sought unique activities, immersive cultural encounters, and authentic interactions with the destination.

2. Wellness And Holistic Luxury With a Sustainable Approach

In recent decades, wellness has become integral to luxury hospitality. Spa retreats, yoga classes, and holistic wellness programs have become essential offerings. Travelers seek rejuvenation of the mind, body, and soul, leading to the rise of wellness-focused luxury properties.

The modern luxury traveler values sustainability and responsible tourism. Luxury hotels are incorporating eco-friendly practices, locally sourced materials, and community engagement initiatives to align with the values of conscious consumers.

TCARE acquires Ruby Home Services

TCARE, a St. Louis-based business that provides technology to assist elder caretakers, has grown by acquiring a New York-based software firm.

TCARE has purchased Ruby Home Services Inc., a company whose software is used to do home safety evaluations for the elderly. The deal’s financial specifics were not disclosed.

The purchase broadens TCARE’s technology, which provides an evidence-based analytics tool that enables social workers, care managers, and care coordinators to assist family members and caregivers caring for elders, foster care children, and children with special needs. TCARE collaborates with managed care companies, government agencies, and health, life, and long-term care insurance providers.

Improving elder care

TCARE co-founder and CEO Ali Ahmadi stated that with the purchase, the local firm has further positioned itself as “the premier aging-in-place technology provider and data analytics provider in the eldercare industry.” TCARE was referred to Ruby by one of its investors, St. Louis-based venture capital firm SixThirty, he said. While TCARE first planned to establish a collaboration with the New York software firm, Ahmadi stated that conversations eventually widened to include a purchase.

Ruby was developed by 25madison, a New York-based venture business focused on the creation of new enterprises and the investment in early-stage startups. TCARE’s acquisition of Ruby, according to 25madison CEO Steven Price, would allow the two companies to further their aim of improving elder care.

“The Ruby team identified the enormous problem of caregiver fatigue when examining the aging-in-place environment. We were delighted with TCARE’s advanced caregiver solutions when we were introduced to the “Price stated. “The combination of TCARE’s best-in-class caregiver solutions and Ruby’s focus on enriching seniors’ lives takes us closer to achieving our shared goal of building a hub for aging that touches numerous aspects of seniors’ lives.” We can allow more elders to live securely and happily in the houses they love if we work together.”

Ruby’s 12 workers will join TCARE as a result of the transaction, according to Adhmadi. He stated that current plans call for Ruby and its crew to relocate to St. Louis. TCARE’s staff has already surpassed 100 individuals, according to Ahmadi, as a result of the purchase and subsequent hiring.

TCARE has emerged as one of St. Louis’ fastest-growing businesses in recent years, having come to the region after earning an Arch Grant in 2019. In 2020, the firm secured a $3 million investment round.

YOTEL Boston’s housekeeping team welcomed a new member. A team of robotics professionals then unpacked the employee, a tall cleaning bot nicknamed “Vi-YO-Let.”

After understanding the property’s floor plan, Vi-YO-Let (pronounced like “violet”), began cleaning and became one of the first ultraviolet bots to arrive in a United States hotel. Vi-YO-Let is mostly plastic and does not have an official gender or even a personality. Nonetheless, the manager of the hotel, Trish Berry, refers to the bot as a “She”.

Vi-YO-Let is the product of a partnership with Denmark-based UVD Robots. And the bot has an extremely serious job of disinfecting the air and surfaces of the hotel. Her arrays of UV lights kill more than 99 percent of viruses and bacteria, including the coronavirus.

Moreover several other hotels have implemented robotics technology for room services and cleaning. Robots working in hotels have proved to be handy for the housekeeping services.  Rosé—a social distancing ambassador has been appointed at the Hotel Trio in Healdsburg, California (a Marriott hotel). Rosé is willing to bring the customers anything, either in-house or via a complimentary shopping service—wine, pillows, pet treats, towels, and groceries. After each delivery, the robot is sanitized thoroughly.

Sister properties Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills and The Beverly Hilton in California are also using the Xenex LightStrike robots. These robots will stay in all the rooms for about eight to ten minutes and clean public restrooms, elevators, kitchens, meeting rooms, and disinfect luggage.

Additional robots can be found across:

  • Embassy Suites by Hilton Los Angeles International Airport
  • Residence Inn by Marriott Los Angeles LAX/Century Blvd
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton Los Angeles International Airport
  • H Hotel Los Angeles
  • Curio Collection by Hilton
  • Residence Inn by Marriott Beverly Hills
  • AC Hotel by Marriott Beverly Hills

New Touchless Sterilization Robot

The new CIRQ+CLEAN touchless sterilization robot is designed by the renowned cloud-based platform CIRQ+. The Cbot is a touchless sterilization innovation that acts as a non-toxic disinfecting solution.

The Cbot has been developed with the most up-to-date approvals by the EPA and kills coronavirus and other pathogens on hard, non-porous surfaces. For cleaning the empty hotel rooms the robot will circumnavigate and dispense an electrostatically-charged disinfectant on surfaces and areas missed by manual cleaning or UV light methods. After the thorough cleaning of the room, housekeepers can enter to complete the routine cleaning. The Cbot sprays down the room again before the guest enters.

Global hospitality learning platform Typsy launched a new plan to support the worldwide hospitality industry during the coronavirus pandemic. The Typsy COVID Support Plan offers free online access to its industry-leading platform and Netflix-style library of 650+ hospitality video lessons. The COVID Support Plan will be available for individuals, businesses, and schools until Sept. 30, 2020.

As venues across the world are being forced to downsize or close in response to the pandemic, businesses can use this support plan to stay engaged and connected with their workforce. Moreover, it will help members to freely develop their hospitality skills, empowering those who have been affected by COVID-19 to access online learning opportunities and re-enter the workforce with confidence.

Typsy CEO Jonathan Plowright describes the initiative as crucial. The negative impacts on hospitality and tourism are devastating, however, a stronger community is building. People are rallying to provide initiatives that give the industry the best chance at a strong rebound in the future. He assured to help not only their existing customers but many more people whose lives and businesses have been disrupted by the effects of COVID-19.

Clients have been impacted enormously both commercially and operationally, which has had a ripple effect on all suppliers. Whilst the revenue has taken a major hit, EHL has been backing as a partner. This puts the company in a fortunate position where it can invest in the platform during this difficult period.

Over the past month, Typsy usage has increased over 1,600% and it’s expected that up to one million new learners will join the platform to learn and earn micro-credentials over the next six months.

Typsy is backed by the world’s leading hotel school and Swiss-based education group Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne (EHL) and counts dozens of global groups, including Radisson, Delaware North, Wyndham, and Hyatt, as clients.

56 percent of Boomers would opt for more vacation days over more compensation

In a year where we have been given one extra day, Four Seasons set out to discover what is most meaningful to travelers, looking at both the value of time off and how we choose to spend that time. According to a new global study commissioned by Four Seasons, almost everyone surveyed, across geographies and age groups, valued more vacation time over more money if given the choice, reaffirming that time continues to be the greatest luxury of all. The study of adults from the US, UK, China, and the *GCC revealed that more than half of Millennials (54%), Gen X (53%) and Boomers (56%) would opt for more vacation days over more compensation. Only Gen Z – many of whom have the luxury of more time yet seek financial independence – value a raise (62%) over more days off (38%).

Today’s travelers are seeking purpose through authentic experiences, returning home with a different understanding of the world around them. As a luxury hospitality company, Four Seasons is at the forefront of this shifting consumer desire, and it inspires how to curate the guest experience, ensuring travelers leave Four Seasons with a sense of deep connection to the community and the destination’s culture.

What Comfort Zone?

The survey found that younger travelers – Millennials and Gen Z – are bigger risk-takers compared to Boomers; however, nearly all (95%) respondents agreed that a vacation is when they would be most likely to step outside of their comfort zone. In fact, more than a third of travelers have done something while on holiday that they didn’t know they could, like trying a new sport or learning a new skill to challenge themselves mentally and physically. This is particularly true for respondents in China, where two-thirds (66%) of Chinese adults surveyed say their travel style is better described as “getting out of their comfort zone” versus other markets (45%).

Come Home Different

Reinforcing the notion of a “post-vacation glow,” more than half (51%) of global respondents noted feeling more motivated, more optimistic (46%) and more patient at work (42%) after a holiday. Close to 4 in 5 (79%) Americans agree that after a vacation, they are more productive in the workplace. In the UK, nearly 3 in 5 respondents who’ve “come home different” say they did so with greater positivity or optimism, more appreciation for their loved ones (45%), a better understanding of others’ motivations (39%) and greater ability to manage stress (38%).

Broadening personal horizons can also produce lifelong benefits. Nearly 3 in 5 respondents reported adopting new interests as a result of their travels, such as listening to new music (43%), learning new languages (36%) and appreciating new forms of art (36%). Younger adults are especially eager to take a new path to self-fulfillment while on vacation, with three-quarters of those under 40 picking up a new hobby or interest. The most popular travel takeaway? Universally, the most common new interest across age groups and regions is cooking or eating new foods (56%), reinforcing the importance of unique and authentic dining experiences, something that Four Seasons is known for the world over.
