The much-anticipated Oscars 2022 Awards were announced Sunday as some of the world’s best films and performances were bestowed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Dune, a 2021 Sci-Fi film directed by Denis Villeneuve, bagged six awards—the most by any film this year. Besides Dune, one film that grabbed everyone’s attention and placed itself in the record books was ‘CODA’.

CODA Wins Big

Written and directed by Sian Heder, CODA won overall three awards at the Oscar 2022. The English-language remake of the 2014 French film La Famille Belier, CODA is a film that brings deaf culture and deaf actors to the forefront. The movie made history as it became the first film produced by a streaming service to win the Best Picture. It beat the likes of Drive my Car, Power of the Dog, and Belfast to win the award. Moreover, Troy Kotsur of CODA became the first deaf man to win an Academy Award for acting as he won the award for the Best Supporting Actor.

Streaming Studios gaining Momentum

In the recent few years, we have witnessed a surge in the number of films produced by streaming studios. The trend started building momentum when Manchester by the Sea by Amazon Studios was nominated as one of the best pictures at the Academy Awards 2017. It further accelerated during the COVID-19 outbreak as audiences were unable to watch the movies in theaters.

During the pandemic, numerous films were made available on streaming/OTT platforms shortly after their theatrical releases.  Some films were even released on streaming platforms due to the restrictions. This, at the time, might have seemed to be a temporary trend. However, even after theaters are opening up presently, many distributors are preferring to release movies on streaming platforms as quickly as possible.

Streaming studios such as Amazon, Netflix, etc. are also trying their hand in producing more movies. The results of this shift are already visible as eight out of ten movies nominated for the Best Picture at Oscar 2022 were available on various streaming platforms before the award ceremony.

This increasing popularity of streaming services marks the rapid shift of the cinema industry from brick-and-mortar theaters to a home-based, intuitive experience.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) chose the finest in film and American television at the 79th Golden Globe Awards. It began its voyage in 1944 and is still wooing Hollywood enthusiasts. The annual custom of holding the Golden Globes in January took a surprising turn in 2022. This year’s ceremony drew 200 people—all dressed in masks—while resembling a modest event.

The event, however, was observed differently this year. The valet line at the iconic Los Angeles arena was empty. With minimal fanfare, the HFPA put on a (relatively) small show to honor the best in cinema and television. The invitees had to provide proof of vaccination, including the booster shot and negative PCR test. Moreover, the Hilton city was transformed into a miniature city—but with the absence of a red carpet.

The Harry Potter Reunion is officially happening and the Potterheads cannot keep calm anymore. The official cast of Harry Potter will unite 20 years after the first Harry Potter movie was released. The alumni of the Harry Potter franchise will be joined by some of the popular characters played by renowned actors and actresses.

52-Second Ride of Nostalgia

According to HBO Max, ‘Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts’ will narrate an enchanting making-of story through all-new, in-depth interviews and cast conversations. The HBO Max Special will be released on 1 January 2022. A 52-second trailer featured clips from several of the world-famous films and promised “the legendary cast” would return “to where the magic started”.

The clip consisted of a compilation of some of the breath-taking and splendid scenes from all the 8 movies, backed by the narrative of the popular character Professor Dumbledore. The special also will air on WarnerMedia’s TBS and Cartoon Network in spring 2022 ahead of the Warner Bros. Pictures theatrical debut of “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.”

The Legendary Wizarding Cast

The most popular wizarding trio Harry, Ron and Hermoine a.k.a Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson will join filmmaker Chris Columbus and other cast members from all eight Harry Potter films for the first time in an HBO Max retrospective special to celebrate the anniversary of the franchise’s first film. They will also be joined by Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, and Ian Hart.

Meanwhile, Emma Watson took to Instagram for sharing her memories of Hogwarts and the film. “Harry Potter was my home, my family, my world and Hermione (still is) my favorite fictional character of all time. I think a journalist once said it was irritating how many times during an interview I mentioned how lucky I was and started counting… But I damn well knew! And still know.” She signed off her extensive post with these words: “I still miss the crew who made these films all the time. Thank you for all of your hard work too – I know your contributions sometimes get overlooked. Happy 20th Anniversary Potterheads,” quoted Emma.

The Potterhead Dimension

Nearly two decades ago, the first-ever Harry Potter ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ was premiered on 16 Nov 2001. Ever since the release of the first movie and launch of the first book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter has successfully (and effortlessly) built a magical dimension—Potterhead. Harry Potter fans not only identify themselves as Potterheads but also have instigated countless fanfiction and alternate to the movie as well as the books. ‘Harry Potter’ became a huge world for Potterheads since its release. In addition, the popular website ‘The Wizarding World’ has become the go-to magical home for the Potterheads worldwide.

Did you know that before the release of the last movie in the Hary Potter series, the production team pasted posters saying ‘Harry Potter: The End’ everywhere along with the release date but without mentioning the name of the movie on it? As surprising as it comes, it is actually a fact. Moreover, the entire cast of Harry Potter had not seen the iconic great hall prior to shooting the popular shooting hat scene. There are numerous fan theories revolving around each and every character of the movie—from Harry to Draco, Bellatrix, Nagini, Snape, Lily, and even Lockheart!

The Harry Potter franchise has taken the world by storm with its massive fan following and audience. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the first HP film, our favorite wizarding trio are ready to be back to the legendary magic school–Hogwarts–and re-live their magical stories of the wizarding world.

Owned by Facebook—WhatsApp is a popular messaging platform that has updated its privacy policy.  The users received a pop-up alert about the updated WhatsApp privacy policy. This stimulated a huge debate about Facebook’s promise of privacy and keeping the users’ interest at stake. Thus, people will either have to live with these rules, keeping in mind the conditions, or switch to a new app altogether.

Facebook promised to maintain the initial policy

During the acquisition of Whatsapp by Facebook, it had vowed to maintain user privacy protection. They had also stated that no changes would be made to it. The messaging app’s data was shared with Facebook for better ad targeting by default. However, the users could opt-out any time without any strings attached then. Now, the opt-out option is going to be completely removed by February 8. If at all you wish you decline the privacy policy, you will be unable to use WhatsApp at all.

The app has landed in the wrong hands, and now Facebook is doing everything to exploit user data. In order to generate more revenue, Facebook has taken this drastic step which affects the users’ privacy.

About the new policy

The privacy policy and terms of service have been laid down in a long 8,000 odd words legal jargon. This ultimately makes no sense to the layman. To get straight to the point, the service will share data with the parent company that includes location data, battery level, IMEI number, mobile network, and even more.

Apart from this, the groups you are participating in, real-time status, profile photo, or even the data about your online status on the app will also be shared with the parent company. Whatsapp now has a separate section named ‘Transactions and Payments data’ in the updated policy. The information of your payments made via Whatsapp will also be stored as stated by the policy.

Despite the layperson thinking there might be no repercussions but only the experts know there’s a lot to lose in the long run. Keeping aside this, some alternative apps will help you—Signal, Telegram, Threema, etc.

US president-elect Joe Biden has selected Miguel Cardona, a public schools proponent of Connecticut, as secretary of education. Biden fulfilled a campaign pledge to choose a teacher for the post.

About Miguel Cardona

According to Reuters, Cardona is a veteran teacher and school administrator. He is also the commissioner for education of Connecticut. Cardona had started his career as an elementary school teacher. He became the assistant superintendent of Meriden School in early 2019, soon becoming the state schools chief.

According to the Connecticut Mirror, Cardona was often the only Latino in his college prep classes. He got distinguished as the youngest school principal of Connecticut at the age of 28.

Cardona is an exemplary figure in the education world. He has shown his tenacity to manage heated conflicts over resources, testing and privatization. His profile matches other Biden nominees. They all appreciate the dignity of work and the prospect of upward mobility.

Diverse Cabinet

Hailing from a Puerto Rican background, he would be the third Latino to be placed in the Cabinet. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus had promoted his candidacy for the post.

In line with his promise to appoint a diversely ethnic team, Biden had named other people as well. He nominated California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, a Mexican-American, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Cuban-born Alejandro Mayorkas is to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

Biden is set to introduce Cardona today at an event in Wilmington, Delaware. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris stated that Cardona will help “build a public education system that lifts up all Americans, regardless of race, background or ZIP code.”

COVID-19 Efforts

Cardona has pushed against several odds to reopen campuses during the pandemic. He harbored the strong belief that public schools are essential for children from low-income and marginalized communities. “Public education is still the great equalizer,” he said.

He has also worked on giving access to digital devices and reliable internet connection to students. Connecticut became the first state to achieve this. Cardona announced, “We are now leading the nation in removing the tech barriers that stood in the way of every child receiving a world-class education.”

Biden has called for public schools to resume offline classes within his first 100 days in office. He has promised to aid struggling public schools with funding, new infrastructure, more social workers and psychologists and education programs.

Other Responsibilities

Cardona will be in charge of handling sexual assault reports in colleges and universities. He will aid the partisan fight over how educational institutions are to handle such cases.

Betsy DeVos, the education secretary of the Trump administration had scrapped the Title IX victims’ rights measures. Biden has promised to revive this to alleviate cases of sexual discrimination in educational institutions.

Deploys a virtual learning environment within two weeks

Dell Technologies is helping students from Vancouver Film School (VFS) keep their creative pursuits on track whether they’re in the physical or virtual classroom. With powerful Dell Precision workstations – combined with Dell EMC infrastructure solutions on the backend – students can access the latest technology for their graphics-intensive curriculum, even when quickly transitioning to a remote learning environment.

Vancouver Film School students create hundreds of productions every year, with the curriculum spanning Film Production, 3D Animation & Visual Effects, Digital Design, Game Design, and VR/AR Design & Development. Their alumni have gone on to be some of the most sought-after artists, creators, and storytellers in the industry.

Class is in the session via remote learning

The IT department while installing virtual set up for teachers and students in the VFS campus, faced two primary obstacles as they started evaluating remote learning needs.

●  Access to the latest technology. Direct production opportunities and access to industry-leading instruction are what attracts students to VFS, so it was critical to provide the same technology to create innovative content in 6k, 4k, and AR/VR.

●  Minimal disruption to students. One of the unique elements of the school’s curriculum is that classes run 9 am – 10 pm every day, with courses starting every two months and lasting up to a year. This meant there was no time to waste for the IT department.

Despite being challenged by unexpected, VFS deployed 900 Dell Precision workstations with NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 GPUs in their labs in a week and a half. By week two, VFS had combined the workstations with Teradici PCoIP® remote protocol solutions, giving most students remote access to their workstations and virtual access to the curriculum. Loaner PCs and monitors were shipped to students who lacked the technology to complete their learning and coursework from home.

Consistent Learning Regardless of Location

Regardless of where the learning happens, VFS students have access to consistent, reliable, and powerful technology. With enterprise-class components and extensive software certifications on Dell Precision workstations, VFS students can now use creative applications like Maxon Redshift, Autodesk Arnold, Unreal Engine, Unity, and Avid Media Composer from home.

Dell Technologies helped VFS keep the curriculum on track and implement a remote learning solution for 1,500 students.

“Vancouver Film School is a great example of virtual learning done right, and it will help prepare the next generation of professionals for creating in remote environments,” said Tom Tobul, vice president, Commercial Client Solutions – Specialty, Dell Technologies.

The donations will provide underserved kids with resources and tools

COVID-19 is creating a world of uncertainty, and it’s affecting millions of kids across the country who don’t have reliable access to the internet at a time when virtual learning is key. To raise support for America’s young people, today’s top voice artists have come together to perform in #FarmOn Benefit Concert.

A modern farm show

On August 27 at 7 p.m. CT, viewers tuning into #FarmOn Benefit Concert will hear some of the well-known artists in country music such as Lee Brice, Martina McBride, Jennifer Nettles, Rodney Atkins, Justin Moore and more. The #FarmOn Benefit Concert is free and will be available on-demand 24/7/365.

Viewers have the opportunity to show their support for 4-H and millions of young people impacted b COVID-19. Donations from this benefit concert will go to National 4-H Council’s FOURWARD Fund, providing kids with the resources, tools and sense of belonging to learn and grow during these unprecedented times.

“Just like 4-H helped me growing up, 4-H is continuing to make a difference in the lives of young people everywhere by providing the resources and sense of community that they need to thrive, no matter their circumstances,” said Jennifer Nettles, Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and 4-H’s national spokeswoman

To help youth move FOURWARD

The 55 million kids who had their school year interrupted by COVID-19 are now navigating an unfamiliar summer. As social distancing and other precautions continue, many of the typical summer activities – including 4-H camps and county and state fairs – are on hold. And for kids in rural communities who don’t have reliable internet at home, it’s especially difficult to access virtual learning and other resources designed to keep them engaged and connected.

The concert is Farm Journal’s way of saying thank you to everyone in agriculture for keeping the nation’s food supply moving forward. The bottom line, the #FarmON movement is fueled by the engagement of farmers and ranchers across the nation supporting agriculture and each other.

The free virtual concert is scheduled to broadcast on RFD-TV and live-streamed on AgWeb.com, Facebook Live and YouTube.

SeeHer Story: Venus Williams with a feature story on July 6

Historically, there have been only a few mediums to celebrate women’s roles and achievements in society. SeeHer Story, a digital video series from Katie Couric  Media and PEOPLE, is one of those mediums which recognizes female trailblazers and rule-breakers from the past 100 years to the present day. Recently, Season 2 of the weekly video series has been announced which is sponsored by Unilever, one of the world’s leading suppliers of Beauty & Personal Care, Home Care, and Foods & Refreshment products.

Premiered on Friday, June 26 on PEOPLE.com and on select digital platforms, SeeHer Story Season 2 also featured in the print edition of PEOPLE, including Wake-Up Call with Katie Couric, PEOPLE Now and on PEOPLE’s social media platforms Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

SeeHer Story is a movement to increase the accurate portrayal of women and girls in advertising and media. Since its launch in 2016, SeeHer has become the leading industry voice for gender equality in media.

Narrated by Couric, who is on the Advisory Board of SeeHer, the series celebrates extraordinary women from all walks of life, races, and cultures. The Season 2 premiere featured one of the all-time greats of women’s tennis, Venus Williams, with a corresponding feature story in the July 6th issue of PEOPLE.

Other trailblazing women who are being recognized for their achievements in Season 2 episodes of SeeHer Story include Fannie Lou Hamer, a voting and women’s rights activist, community organizer, and leader in the civil rights movement; Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani Pashtun activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate; Simone Biles, the most decorated American gymnast with a combined total of 30 Olympic and World Championship medals; Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, an American former actress, philanthropist, and member of the British royal family; Ida B. Wells, an American investigative journalist, educator, and an early leader in the civil rights movements, and more.

“From our popular ‘Women Changing the World’ franchise to the new SeeHer Story video series, PEOPLE is committed to creating content franchises and features that empower women,” said Will Lee, Senior Vice President, Digital, Meredith Entertainment Group.

Recognizing these women and telling their stories will not only give them their due but will also inspire the next generation of leaders. It is so important to amplify the voices and stories of strong women – both from current times and the past – who have helped shape cultures and change it for the better.

Social distancing is working. But we have to keep going. This is when it matters the most. We are going in the right way. The situation we are facing today is quite similar to what Issac Newton in his early 20s faced. He wasn’t a “Sir” yet when the Great Plague of London hit. He was also in lockdown owing to the Bubonic plague.

But as similar too, the lockdown did not stop him from following his spirit. The 350 years old plague somehow triggered a miracle to happen. By maintaining social distancing, Newton came up with his most crowned discovery and pathbreaking theory that changed the world forever. “During a pandemic, Issac Newton had to work from home, too…” writes Washington post.

Without knowing what causes plague, people back then still practiced some of the same things we do to avoid illness. Social distancing was one of them, which Issac Newton used wisely to make most out of it. Back then, he was just a student at Trinity College when the plague started. Probably it was the abundance of time during the isolation that gave him an opportunity to concentrate and dive deeper.

It is said that in 1665, after scoring his Bachelor’s degree from Trinity College, Newton had to discontinue his further education temporarily, due to the outbreak. Who knew that this young man was soon going to propound theories of optics, calculus, and even gravity. He became one of the most prominent personalities in the world of science, mathematics, and astronomy, and established himself as one of the greatest minds of modern science.

The book Memoirs of Sir Isaac Newton’s Life reveals the story when Newton and his friend went to a garden and experienced the famous falling of apples:

“…we went into the garden, & drank them under the shade of some apple trees, only he, & myself. amidst other discourse, he told me, he was just in the same situation, as when formerly, the notion of gravitation came into his mind. “why should that apple always descend perpendicularly to the ground,” thought he to himself: occasion’d by the fall of an apple, as he sat in a contemplative mood: “why should it not go sideways, or upwards? but constantly to the center of the earth? assuredly, the reason is, that the earth draws it. there must be a drawing power in matter. & the sum of the drawing power in the matter of the earth must be in the earth’s center, not on any side of the earth. therefore dos this apple fall perpendicularly, or toward the center. if matter thus draws matter; it must be in proportion of its quantity. therefore the apple draws the earth, as well as the earth, draws the apple.”

Newton confirmed that this event gave him the inspiration to work on his theory of gravitational force.

As students begin to navigate a virtual learning environment in response to the COVID-19 crisis, photographs, videos and new media included in the programs may offer new windows onto the world at a time when it needs to catalyze awareness of global village in ways that inspire positive change. In response to the scenario, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) is launching Canadian Geographic Education’s #OnlineClassroom.

The program offers its free, bilingual learning tools to all Canadians to support teachers, parents, and students isolating at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. #OnlineClassroom provides Can Geo Education with a great opportunity to reach more students, parents, teachers and everyone else through dynamic resources that educate and entertain at the same time.

Designed to inspire and aware

The #OnlineClassroom is starting off with a bang by launching The Anthropocene Education program, which will take students on adventures through augmented and virtual reality. Geared toward grades 4 to 12, this initiative develops student’s understandings of our world’s most pressing environmental challenges, such as plastic waste issues, species extinction, and climate change.

Can Geo Education partnered with The Anthropocene Project, an internationally celebrated Canadian project created by renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky and award-winning filmmakers Nicholas de Pencier and Jennifer Baichwal. Through evocative photography, a documentary, 360-degree cinematography, and captivating augmented-reality installations, this multimedia project explains the emergence of the Anthropocene epoch, distinguished by human-caused changes to our planet.

Witness planetary change

Students need only a smartphone or tablet to explore a 3D model of Big Lonely Doug, a 1,000-year-old Douglas fir in a clear-cut forest in British Columbia, or to learn about issues such as urbanization in Lagos, Nigeria, or resource extraction in Italy’s marble quarries. And students can also watch 360-degree virtual reality films online or download them to a VR headset. All these resources, and many more, include lesson plans.

In addition to launching a new virtual classroom, RCGS will also be hosting Google Hangouts where participants can join explorers for video chats on a variety of topics, and other activities such as trivia challenges and mapping exercises.
