Does reading help raise money? It sounds like a charity and requires someone with a mesmerizing voice or at least popular enough to get the audience’s attention. But when an artist with semantic success and popularity ‘will’ to help represent the charity for homeless people, everything becomes possible. Will Smith will read a bed time story during a one-night fundraising event to help fight global homelessness.
Smith agreed to participate in this initiative and agreed to partner with The World’s Big Sleep Out, a campaign to raise funds to combat homelessness and displacement. A mission to tackle these twin issues across the world. The campaign is an effort to encourage people all over the world to help organize or at least join a giant “sleep out” for a night. This event cum challenge is an invitation to make people realize what it feels like to sleep in open. Through this experience, The World’s Big Sleep Out is an effort to raise $50 million to fund various charities globally.
“I have a great time with my life and I wanna share it. I love living, I think that’s infectious, it’s something that you can’t fake.” – Will Smith
On December 7th, Smith will be reading a bed time story for everyone participating in Times Square. As reported in The Washington Post, Dame Helen Mirren will also join him in this philanthropic project. She will read hers in Trafalgar Square in London. Each location is expected to feature live performances. This giant sleep out is also planned in 50 other major cities, like Chicago, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Los Angeles. 50,000 people are expected to participate.
“For one night, in backyards, hometowns and iconic locations across the globe, we will sleep out in unison to create the world’s largest display of solidarity with and support of those experiencing homelessness and displacement,” The Big Sleep Out states on its website.
International partners for the campaign include UNICEF USA, Malala Fund, Social Bite, and The Institute of Global Homelessness.
Josh Littlejohn MBE, the founder of World’s Big Sleep Out said that it doesn’t matter if you are taking part in Times Square or in your back garden with your family, by sleeping out for one night on December 7th, we can simultaneously express our compassion for homeless people who have no other choice and raise life-saving funds to make a difference. We can also send a message to the world’s political leaders that urgent action is required to address the human suffering that we each witness on our streets every day.
